Toronto Dance Theatre proudly presents the return engagement of Artistic Director Christopher House's acclaimed 2007 creation, Chiasmata, running March 12-15th and 18th-21st 2009 in the intimate 115-seat Winchester Street Theatre. Chiasmata was nominated for a 2007 Dora Award for Outstanding Choreography (House was in competition with himself that year - the Dora was awarded to his 2006 work, Timecode Break.)
Created in close collaboration with its exceptional cast of twelve dancers, Chiasmata is a showcase for astonishing physical virtuosity and dynamic contrasts. The performers (described by Paula Citron of The Globe and Mail as “some of the best on the planet”) navigate a terrain that ranges from playful to lyrical to menacing. Says Christopher House: “In the two years since its premiere, the dancers have taken Chiasmata to a fabulous new level of performance. I am thrilled to be able to present this evolution to the Toronto audience.”
The word Chiasmata, from the Greek, refers to a series of crossings or intersections; “Chi” is the Greek letter X. In the field of genetics, ‘chiasmata’ refers to the connection points where DNA strands exchange information. Featuring an original score by Gemini award-winning sound designer Phil Strong, costumes by Dora Mavor Moore award-winner Cheryl Lalonde and a breathtaking lighting design by Roelof Peter Snippe, Chiasmata takes the audience on a strange and beautiful journey through the portals of memory.
These performances will mark the return of former company members Valerie Calam, Kristy Kennedy and Sean Ling to TDT as guest artists, to reprise their roles in this special remount.
“A brave new world of dance…Chiasmata definitely calls for a second viewing to mine its riches.”
